Biography

Mr. Takemoto was appointed as Programme Director of UNU-IAS in October 2011. He is currently affiliated with the University of Tokyo IR3S as Policy Advisor for Global Change Research. Prior to these appointments, he developed policies on international environmental cooperation and global environment, in particular, climate change and bio-diversity as Vice-Minister for Global Environment Affairs. He also served as a Director-General of Environmental Management Bureau (2005-08), responsible for air and water quality management and enhancement of the environmental co-benefits. Mr. Takemoto served for CBD/COP10 as its Alternate President (2010), CSD-18 as its Co-Chair (2010), OECD/EPOC as Vice Chair (2004-07) and UNFCCC/COP3 as Special Assistant to its President (1997). He is Chair of Advisory Committee of UNCRD, Co-Chair of Technical Expert Group (TEG) for Basel Convention and Council Member of International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). He received Master of International Public Policy from the Johns Hopkins University SAIS (1992) and Bachelor of Engineering in Environmental Planning from the University of Tokyo (1974).
