Magroves are some of the most biodiverse and productive ecosystems on the planet. Due to their extensive degradation over the past decades, mangrove restoration actions are increasingly promoted to ensure the sustained delivery of the benefits provided by mangroves. However, mangrove restoration actions often fail to select properly the appropriate sites and species for mangrove restoration, which affects their effectiveness.
This paper develops a methodological approach that can inform the spatial planning of species-specific and mixed-species mangrove restoration, as well as the priority areas for mangrove restoration in terms of landscape connectivity. Although the focus is the Large Xiamen Bay ecosystem in China, the proposed technique can have applicability in other geographical contexts.
