We are excited to invite you to our upcoming online seminar in our seminar series of the JST Social Scenario Research Project “Social scenario research program towards a carbon neutral society “.
The 7th Basic Energy Plan and the 2050 carbon neutrality goal present numerous challenges. This lecture will showcase recent research findings on the economic feasibility and potential of renewable energy, hydrogen, CCS, and heat decarbonization. Prof. Takashi Otsuki will delve into these topics, and Prof. Masakazu Sugiyama of the University of Tokyo will facilitate the discussion.
[About Prof. Takashi Otsuki]
Prof. Otsuki specializes in long-term energy systems and climate change mitigation measures. He has a deep expertise in energy system modeling based on mathematical programming and economic evaluation of CO2 reduction technologies. His research focuses on topics such as optimal energy mix, the relationship between energy and critical minerals, and the potential assessment of renewable energy. He also concurrently serves as a Special Senior Researcher at the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan.
[About the Project and the Seminar Series]
The JST Social Scenario Research Project aims to contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society in Japan, emphasizing sustainable development through science and technology. This initiative envisions a desirable future society and explores the pathways, options, and strategies to achieve it. Since April 2023, the project has expanded to integrate knowledge from a broad range of researchers, including those from the humanities and social sciences, fostering further development and societal contribution. A key aspect of the project is the “Social Scenario for Accelerating Carbon Neutral Transition,” focusing on both quantitative and qualitative analyses of carbon-neutral technologies, and developing strategies for societal implementation and system design. The seminar series with scenario experts is part of this effort, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and strategies to accelerate the transition to a carbon-neutral society.

For our online webinar on October on 28, 2024, in the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) Low-Carbon Society Scenario Research Project webinar series, we welcomed Takashi Otsuki, Associate Professor at Yokohama National University and Special Senior Researcher at the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan. He presented a lecture titled “Key Issues for Achieving Carbon Neutrality in Japan’s Energy Sector.”
[Discussion & Q&A]
Moving toward the 7th Strategic Energy Plan and ultimately carbon neutrality by 2050, a range of issues such as technology, economics, policy design, and social acceptance must be addressed. In this presentation, recent research findings on the economic viability and potential of renewable energy, hydrogen, carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), and decarbonization of heat sources were introduced, and possible solutions were discussed.
