As global environmental challenges intensify and uncertainty grows around social and technological change, scenario research that envisions sustainable futures has become a foundation for policy debate. In September 2024, the United Nations held the “Summit of the Future” adopting the Pact for the Future and further elevating international momentum to rethink policy design and the shape of society from a long-term perspective. Within the Society for Environmental Economics and Policy Studies, members have contributed extensively to domestic and international research, and discussions have been active within the society. This symposium looks back on past research, surveys the latest trends, and discusses pathways for applying scenarios to environmental economics and policy through concrete case studies. It also explores prospects for future research.
This symposium is held as part of the 30th anniversary of the Society for Environmental Economics and Policy Studies.
It is open to anyone with an interest in scenario research, carbon-neutral society, and climate change mitigation — including researchers, business professionals, and government officials with some background knowledge, as well as young scholars and students. Participation is free of charge.
