Institute for Future Initiatives (IFI), The University of Tokyo
As Asian nations move forward in their efforts to develop industrial capacity for offshore wind, they face the multiple challenges of achieving cost-efficiency, securing materials, equipment and human resources into the future, and bringing sustainable development to local economies. To address these challenges, it is crucial that these nations collaborate for the optimal development of a transboundary Asian supply chain. We would like to discuss the possibilities of such collaboration from the sub-national perspective of local ports, including its implications for development strategies of leading ports.

We were honored to participate in the Global Offshore Wind Summit – Japan, co-hosted by the Japan Wind Power Association, Global Wind Energy Council and Kitakyushu City, through one of their side events. There we invited the Japan Desk at Ba Ria Vung Tau Province, Vietnam, and a key official from the Port and Harbor Bureau of Kitakyushu City to share their experiences and future plans of offshore wind port development. After a moderated Q&A session, participants both online and offline engaged in a free discussion on the possibilities of transboundary cooperation, starting from sub-national levels (including port-to-port cooperation) and moving on to the topic of the creation of an East Asian regional market and supply chain.
