We will welcome Dr. Caroline Zimm from the Transformative Institutional and Social Solutions (TISS) Research Group of the Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE) Program at IIASA in Austria, and explore the intersections between scenario research and justice/equity.
This webinar explores integrating justice and equity perspectives into climate scenario research. As climate scenarios increasingly inform policy decisions, ensuring they reflect diverse justice concerns—including distributional, procedural, and recognition justice—becomes critical. We examine concepts and terminology and practical methods and approaches for embedding equity considerations throughout the scenario development process. We discuss recent advances, including examples from the Justice Model Intercomparison Project (JustMIP) demonstrate how researchers are operationalizing different justice considerations and discuss limits and further research needs.
[About Dr. Caroline Zimm]
Caroline Zimm is a research scholar jointly associated with the Transformative Institutional and Social Solutions (TISS) Research Group of the IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE) Program and the Equity and Justice (EQU) Research Group of the Population and Just Societies (POPJUS) Program.
She currently works on the international research initiatives of the Earth Commission of the Global Commons Alliance, and leads the IIASA Strategic Initiative, Just Transitions to Net-zero Carbon Emissions for All (JustTrans4ALL). Her research is concerned with the diffusion of technologies and policies for sustainable development, inequalities across countries, and transformative development pathways for humanity within a stable Earth system.
Prior to joining IIASA in 2014, she worked in development cooperation and on consulting projects in the field of rural energy supply, energy access, and climate change. She held positions with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), a private consulting firm, and the German Development Agency (GIZ) where she was based in Cambodia and India.
Zimm received her PhD from the University of Technology in Vienna, Austria (Energy Economics Group), focusing on the early stage of electric vehicle diffusion.
[About the Project and the Seminar Series]
The JST Social Scenario Research Project aims to contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society in Japan, emphasizing sustainable development through science and technology. This initiative envisions a desirable future society and explores the pathways, options, and strategies to achieve it. Since April 2023, the project has expanded to integrate knowledge from a broad range of researchers, including those from the humanities and social sciences, fostering further development and societal contribution. A key aspect of the project is the “Social Scenario for Accelerating Carbon Neutral Transition,” focusing on both quantitative and qualitative analyses of carbon-neutral technologies, and developing strategies for societal implementation and system design.
The seminar series with scenario experts is part of this effort, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and strategies to accelerate the transition to a carbon-neutral society.
