A techno-economic and life cycle analyses of battery-assisted off-grid hydrogen production system were conducted for quantifying hydrogen production cost and environmental impacts, e.g., life cycle greenhouse gas emissions and abiotic resource depletion impact.
The battery-assisted off-grid hydrogen production system contains batteries to regulate solar energy fluctuations and produces hydrogen by water electrolysis.
From the respective technology roadmaps for solar panels, batteries and electrolysers, their future potentials as technology were extracted and utilized for the capacities optimization of the technologies.
The performance of battery-assisted hydrogen production on unit cost and greenhouse gas emission may be high enough to be competitive with other hydrogen production or fossil fuel use. In contrast, the environmental impact of this system on the abiotic resource depletion is too large to be environmentally competitive to other options.
