Report of the G20 High Level Independent Panel on Financing the Global Commons for Pandemic Preparedness and Response was released
G20 High Level Independent Panel on Financing the Global Commons for Pandemic Preparedness and Response (G20 HLIP) released its official report, A Global Deal for Our Pandemic Age and presented it to G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors during the Summit held in Italy from 9 to 10 July. Prof Naoko Ishii joined the panel and developed the report with other panel members. The Panel was established on January 26, 2021 by G20 to recommend solutions for sustainable financing of the global commons for pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response.
In the report, the Panel calls for several actions including increase in international financing at least by US$15 billion per year over the next five years, and strengthening global governance for pandemic preparedness and response through creation of a new Global Health Threats Board which provides systemic oversight of finance for timely and effective resourcing and coordination of international efforts to mitigate pandemic threats. G20 members welcomed the report and agreed concrete proposals to be presented at the G20 Joint Finance and Health Ministers’ meeting in October.
