Report: On 28 August, the Security Study Research Unit of the Institute for Future initiatives, the University of Tokyo invited Partners Hitoshi Kaise (Roland Berger) and Masashi Go (Roland Berger) to give a science and technology seminar on the situation surrounding economic security in relation to the battery industry as the lecturers. The lecturers explained the latest battery markets in the US, Europe and China, the current state of the markets in the US, China and Europe, the current state of battery-related industries, the challenges at each stage of the supply chain, the characteristics of the economic security policies of the US, Europe and China in relation to batteries and the impact of these policies on business. Thereafter, there were suggestions for Japan in response to such current situation, namely that Japan should study the supply chain constructed by the US, Europe and China carefully and consider the creation of an economic zone in which Japan can win and an investment system in the Japanese Union and a supply chain that makes it work, in which Japan will not lose.
After their presentations, Chief Researcher Shingo Ito (Research Institute for International Economics), Senior Researcher Hotaka Machida (Panasonic Research Institute) and Professor Seio Nakajima (Waseda University) mainly joined the discussion and discussed issues such as the challenges of building supply chains in Southeast Asia and trends in Chinese and Japanese companies operating in Southeast Asia. There were also several participants from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, indicating the high level of interest among policy makers. Associate Professor Ryo Sahashi (University of Tokyo) chaired this seminar.
