SDGs Collaborative Research Unit Relationship between Minerals Extraction and Human Rights Violation in Conflict-Affected Area : Have Conflict Minerals Regulations brought about Mechanism Change in the Democratic Republic of the Congo?

This research conducts a case study on the eastern DRC, where armed groups and military have obtained profit from extraction and trade of minerals since 1996 and became a target of conflict minerals regulations.
Research methods are literature review and interviews. First, to examine the behavior of actors, this research collects and analyzes the information from reports of NGOs and UN experts, and statistical data.
Second, to identify the details of human rights violations, this research conducts interviews with refugees who fled from the eastern DRC to neighboring countries. In addition, this research collects information on human rights violations in cooperation with gynecologist Deni Mukwege, who is committed to helping victims of sexual violence in eastern DRC.
