2025 promises to be a big year for the UK-Japan Enhanced Global Strategic Partnership. January saw elite British and Japanese airborne units deployed in the bilateral ground exercise Vigilant Isles. Later in the summer, the Royal Navy’s Carrier Strike Group 2025 (CSG25) led by flagship HMS Prince of Wales is scheduled to visit Japan. Meanwhile, the UK-Japan-Italy Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) for the next generation fighter aircraft begins its resource-intensive design and development phase in earnest. Britain’s first full year after accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in December 2024 is also expected to deliver trade benefits. On economic security, an inaugural UK-Japan Foreign and Trade Ministers’ meeting (the “Economic 2+2”) has been launched, alongside ongoing collaborations such as the UK-Japan Cyber Dialogue and Digital Partnership. In this panel, researchers from UTokyo and Cambridge will assess these and other developments, with an eye to further opportunities for expanded partnerships.
