TITLE : Interconnecting Europe:Challenges for the Common Electricity Market in the EU
SPEAKER : Maria Pastukhova, M.A.(SWP)
DATE : June 27 Thu 15:30 – 16:30
Abstract :
The European Union has been moving towards the liberalization and integration of its national electricity markets for over two decades, with the first liberalization measures being introduced in 1996. Since then, the market has undergone considerable modifications and is nowadays the most interconnected international power system in the world. With the Clean Energy for All Europeans Package first proposed in 2016, the EU electricity market has entered a new phase of transformations which should prepare it for smoother and more efficient transition towards further decarbonization and a consumer-driven energy system. There are however significant challenges in place that might potentially hinder further market integration. This presentation will offer a brief overview of the current electricity market and the newest policies introduced under the Clean Energy Package as well as address the main challenges remaining for the market’s future development.
